Unit Notes

Unit notes- misogyny:

When a "*" is used, it is indicating a moment where misogyny is present within the notes from the different texts.

Milun:

  • The female character is not named in the story at all- one could interpret this as the author not finding her to be important enough to mention, but instead, just a character to keep the story going *
  • The woman is in love with Milun but was given to another man by her father*
    • women from this time had no freedom- they were property (women were objects)*
  • When she was pregnant it had to be hidden because punishment for that would include torture or possibly being sold into slavery- she lost all worth from having child out of wedlock*
    • Milun does not suffer at all aside from being away from the girl and his child *
    • The girl feels that it would be better to die than marry the lord she is betrothed to because she knows there is a good chance he will find out. *

Taming of the Shrew:

  • The title itself refers to the female protagonist, Katherine, as a "shrew" *
  • Petruchio wants to make Katherine into a traditional and submissive wife, but she is independent and rebellious against traditional values. *
    • due to the gender roles of the time, Katherine being "tamed" is the only way she will make a good wife.*
    • is compared to Bianca because she is what men want in a wife *
  • Punishments that women endure when they are not traditional:*****
    • insults
    • abuse
    • considered "unruly"
    • are not usually taken as wives because they are less than other women
    • humiliated

Queen Elizabeth's speech to the troops at Tilbury:

  • Queen Elizabeth has come to talk to her troops and give encouragement to them during the time of the Spanish Armada
  • Because she had no husband and there was not a king to speak to troops, Queen Elizabeth gave a speech to them herself- but knew they would not listen unless she used a certain tactic:
    • Compared herself to a man so that the troops would know she was serious *
    • degraded herself and other women in the midst of this *
    • "I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm..." ***********

The Description of a Woman's Age:

  • Tusser uses age to describe a woman's worth*
    • this text is split into parts: th enumbers beside each line are the ages of the women Tusser is talking about
  • He believes that beauty for women only lasts within the first 14 years of life before everything goes down hill*
  • between 14 and 28, women need to be married because beauty really begins to "swerve" *
  • Tusser has another passage for men and thier age, but the picture he has painted for them and their aging is far less horrid than the one he believes for women *

To the Virgins, to Make Much 0f Time:

  • "Gather ye rose buds while ye may" - referring to the virgins who have yet to be married *
  • "Old time is still a-flying; and this same flower that smiles today tomorrow will be dying" - beauty that these women have will surely fade as time goes on, making it difficult to obtain a man *
  • the second stanza refers to time fading like the sun rises and sets- women getting older and not using their time wisely enough so they need to hurry *
  • the last stanza says to marry while you can before your beauty fades becuase when it does, "you may forever tarry" *

The Winter's Tale:

  • King Polixenes, who was the best friend of King Leontes is visiting the kingdom and has been there for 9 months

    • Hermione, wife of King Polixenes, begs Leontes to stay longer instead of leaving again. He agrees.

  • Jealousy erupts from Polixenes as he thinks that Leontes and Hermione have had an affair and the baby is Leontes'*

    • Hermione is thrown in jail and has the baby that is ordered to be abandoned in a desolate place by the king *

    • the baby is taken and Hermione dies *

    • As a result of all of these things, the king's only son dies due to sorrow

    • There is regret for Hermione's death but it is too late because the king was stubborn and did not have faith in a woman who was friends with a man

  • Perdita, Hermione's daughter lives and is raised by a sheppard but is judged for her rank when Leontes' son wants to marry her *

    • the two betrothed run away to Polixene's land where he figures out that Perdita is his

    • Leontes shows up and everyone regains their happiness

    • in joy, they go to to the house of Paulina where she has a statue of Hermione that comes to life and she lives again

  • To save his daughter, who he believes is the most beautiful of the village, she will need to dress as a man and hide in the woods*
    • being beautiful makes women objects in this *
    • being a virgin means that the "monster" can come after them*
  • On the other side of this, a shepherd makes the same plan for his daughter, Phillida, becuase of the same fear
  • the play jumps to Cupid trying to win the affection of a nymph that belongs to Diana
    • she refuses him because the nymphs are supposed to keep their chastity *
